Fairfield Firefighters

Fairfield’s firefighters provide excellence in public safety – specifically fire suppression, fire prevention, and emergency medical services – to a population of more than 122,000 residents. Six fire engines and a ladder truck are staffed 24 hours a day by Fairfield’s bravest and respond to 16,000 emergencies every year. We work day and night to keep Fairfield’s community safe.

Facts

Why has the City of Fairfield threatened to break its agreement with the City’s Firefighters Association?

The City cries wolf about a budget shortfall, despite a professional, independent audit proving otherwise.  They fail to recognize the rising hidden costs associated with refusing to negotiate in good faith leads to higher firefighter attrition rates, higher injury rates, and increased mandatory overtime.

Does the City of Fairfield face a budget shortfall?

The City’s Reserve Fund has grown over the past five years due to budget surpluses. This is because actual revenues have exceeded budgeted revenues, resulting in better-than-expected financial results each year. The City’s General Fund Reserve exceeds the city’s policy by $19.4 million.

As of June 2024, the General Fund Reserve was 35% of expenditures, surpassing the City's policy of 20% (according to the City’s financial statement).

How has the Fairfield Fire Department's call volume changed over the past 5 years?

From 2019 to 2024, call volume increased from 14,019 to 16,896, a 20.52% increase.

How does call volume for Fairfield Firefighters compare to other cities in our region?

Fire departments will compare calls per firefighter to make sure they have enough firefighters to keep their communities safe.  Fairfield Firefighters, on average, answer 810 calls per firefighter per year. Whereas the following cities have more firefighters answering emergency calls to make sure their communities remain safe.
